Four young engineer-turned-entrepreneurs from the state have designed and developed an electricity-powered wheelchair that’s heavy on features but easy on the pocket.

To build something better than the motorised wheelchairs available in the market, the team consisting of a production engineer and three mechanical engineers, all products of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (formerly University College of Engineering), Burla, joined hands in May last year.

A survey report that highlighted the huge demand for electric-operated vehicles caught the fancy of engineers Soumyadarshan Meher, Samit Ranjan, Subhranshu Bhoi and Deepak Behera.

Inspired by the report, the quartet with more than three years experience in the automobile industry came together to do something of their own.

The new wheelchair will, however, have regular features such as battery and manual operation facilities, variation of operating speed and the ability to ascend or descend 12 degrees.

Once charged, the battery can run up to 15km at one go.

The wheelchair is on display at the ongoing Micro Small and Medium Enterprise Fair at Exhibition Ground in the city.
