To address grievances of women in a better way, commissionerate of police have decided to start ‘woman support centres’ (WSCs) in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The WSCs would be opened at DCP offices in the twin cities on September 3.

“After introduction of pink auto service for women, it will be another woman-friendly initiative by police. Trained counsellors of an NGO will head the WSCs. They will listen to the problems of survivor of physical violence or psychological harassment and counsel them,” twin cities commissioner of police R P Sharma told TOI.

“The counsellors would coordinate and help the survivors get medical and legal support,” Sharma said.

Police said the assignment of WSCs would be different from Mahila and Sishu desks in police stations. Police officers currently manage the desks.

Visitors will be more comfortable interacting with counsellors at the WSCs, an insider said. Besides, such desks are virtually defunct due to shortage of staff.
