According to this report from Times of India, Odisha government is preparing for filing application for Geographical Indication (GI) registration for palm leaf etching craft. GI tag can help in reviving the age-old traditional craft and improving in the economic standard of the artists. There are around 1000 palm-leaf artists are in Puri, Khurda and Cuttack districts.
There are as many as three lakh palm leaf manuscripts in Odisha of which 37,000 manuscripts of 27 different categories are in the State Museum.
